After school Bertil did his military service at KA1 in Vaxholm. There he learnt Morse code and passed his exam for a radio amateur licence.
Bertil has worked at the Royal Institute for Technology, for the Swedish Air Force, for a Norwegian computer company and other big computer companies. His last employment in Sweden was at Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå (TT).
Bertil is a very curious person with knowledge in many different fields. What he doesn’t know, he’ll find out. His many hobbies, apart from technique and computers, include electronics, gemology, astronomy, silver smithery, amateur radio, minerals and gold panning. He has on a couple of occasions been on visits in Australia, where he has both been digging for opales and panning for gold.
On December 6, 1996, Bertil and his wife Gunilla immigrated to Kenya in order to start a new life with better life quality and values. They bought a piece of agricultural land in a village in Western Kenya, about 20 kilometres north of the Equator, where they built a small rain forest hotel with the help of the locals and local materials. There they lived during five years without neither electricity nor water.
During his years in Africa, Bertil used his innovative and curious mind on many occasions making different innovations to facilitate the every-day life and to solve problems for the villagers.
They returned from Africa in June 2001 with only a suitcase each; they had to start their new life from square one.
In November 2007 Bertil had a stroke and he is nowadays in a wheelchair, uncapable of having an employment outside home. As a complication after his stroke, Bertil has aphasy (difficulty to speak). He is, however, a stubborn fighter who is not easily giving up.
Already at the moment of feeling the approaching stroke, Bertil decided to fight for a come-back. In spite of his deficiencies (paralysis on his right side and aphasy) he is not giving up. He sees his friends, works with his computer and is also working hard on his body rehabilitation. His enthusiasm, curiosity, thirst for knowledge and fighting spirit are quite unaltered.
The presentation of Bertil Lindström was made by his adventure-wife Gunilla Fagerholm.
